Jowai, Sep 25: The District Medical and Health Office, West Jaintia Hills, on Thursday commemorated the 10th Ayurveda Day at the District Library Auditorium, Mynthong, Jowai, under the theme “Ayurveda for People & Planet.”

Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla graced the occasion as chief guest, with Deputy Commissioner Abhinav Kumar Singh, IAS, as guest of honour. District Medical and Health Officer Dr. P. Shylla, along with other dignitaries, was also present.
In his address, Shylla reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding Ayush infrastructure in Meghalaya. He highlighted ongoing projects, including the Ayush Hospital at Sohra, new facilities in Garo Hills, and the under-construction 30-bedded Ayush hospital at Mookyndur, West Jaintia Hills. Stressing that Ayush represents a way of life beyond treatment, he urged doctors and stakeholders to tap into Meghalaya’s rich medicinal plant resources and establish local manufacturing and pharmacy units.

Deputy Commissioner Singh underlined Ayurveda’s focus on prevention and wellbeing, stressing the importance of simple practices like yoga, a balanced diet, and natural remedies for fostering harmony between body, mind, and environment.
Earlier, Dr. Bonnie Hinge described Ayurveda as a forward-looking system integrating health, balance, and joy, while urging the adoption of Ayurvedic practices for personal wellbeing and planetary health. Dr. Yoolang Sumer noted the rising recognition of Ayurveda post-Covid, particularly for chronic and lifestyle diseases, but flagged challenges such as the absence of local medicine manufacturing.

The programme also featured an essay competition, with prizes awarded to winners. Dr. Sakachica Dkhar presented a report of the activities, while Shri Pynkhreh Susngi delivered the welcome address and Dr. Lukarisa Rymbai proposed the vote of thanks.
