Dibrugarh, April 28: A 27-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly killing her four-year-old daughter in Assam’s Sivasagar district, in a case that has shocked residents of a tea garden community.
The incident occurred on Sunday morning at Khorahat Grant Tea Estate under Demow Police Station. According to police, the child was found with fatal injuries, while the mother had also sustained severe wounds after an alleged attempt to take her own life.
Both were rushed to a nearby government hospital, where doctors declared the child dead. The woman, who suffered critical neck injuries, was later shifted to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh, where she remains in the Intensive Care Unit.
Sivasagar Senior Superintendent of Police Papori Chetia said police received information around noon, following which5 a team from Demow Police Station reached the spot and began an investigation.
“A sharp weapon suspected to have been used in the crime has been recovered and will be sent for forensic examination,” the SSP said.
Police have registered a case under Section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Officials said further legal proceedings will continue once the accused woman recovers.
Family members told police that only the mother and child were present at home at the time of the incident. They also said the reason behind the alleged act remains unknown.
Investigators are currently recording statements of relatives and examining all possible angles, while the child’s body has been sent to AMCH for post-mortem.
