Guwahati, April 15: A political row has erupted in Assam after the mother of one of the youngest candidates in the Assembly elections approached the National Commission for Women (NCW), accusing Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of making “false and defamatory” remarks during the campaign.
Sujata Gurung Chowdhury, a Guwahati resident and mother of 27-year-old candidate Kunki Chowdhury, has filed a formal complaint seeking urgent intervention, claiming she was dragged into the political spotlight despite having no direct role in electoral politics.

In her complaint, Chowdhury alleges that during a public address, the Chief Minister made a series of accusations against her — including claims that her social media posts hurt public sentiment, that she had sympathies for Pakistan, supported “anti-national” elements, and consumed beef. She has denied all allegations, calling them “baseless, malicious, and politically motivated.”
At the centre of the controversy is a photograph that was publicly cited to support the claims.Chowdhury has clarified that the image was taken at an immersive museum in Denver, United States, and the object in her hand was an artistic prop — not food. She has attached a supporting letter from the organisation confirming the item was a display prop meant for visitors.

The complaint also flags the fallout after the remarks alleging that her personal photographs, including those with her minor son, were circulated widely on social media without consent.
She has claimed sustained online abuse, harassment, and the spread of manipulated and AI-generated content, leading to “serious mental distress” and reputational harm.
Chowdhury has urged the Commission to take immediate cognisance, order an inquiry, ensure removal of objectionable online content, and recommend legal action.

She has also sought protection for her dignity and her child’s privacy.
Copies of the complaint have been sent to the Assam Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police.
The development adds a fresh flashpoint to Assam’s charged election climate, raising questions around campaign rhetoric, misinformation, and the growing impact of digital harassment in politics.
