Tura, Sept 25: Renowned young Garo songwriter, composer and music producer Mikhail Marak has arrived in Spain to attend the prestigious San Sebastian International Film Festival (SSIFF), where the film “Shape of Momo” — for which he composed the music — is being officially premiered.
The film, directed by Tribeny Rai and shot in the scenic state of Sikkim, had its world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival just a week ago, receiving critical acclaim. It has also been selected for the Hamburg Film Festival, further cementing its place on the global cinematic stage.
Speaking to HubNews in an exclusive interview, Mikhail shared his joy and pride. “The film was appreciated by all and applauded the entire team for five minutes. The entire crew was very happy when they received such a warm reception. I feel proud and blessed that I am the only Garo representing my tribe,” he said.
Marak’s participation in the international festival circuit not only highlights his musical talent but also showcases the rich cultural heritage of the Garo community. At San Sebastian, he proudly donned a traditional Garo Pandra and a “Rikgitok”, symbolizing his roots and commitment to representing his people on the world stage.
This marks a significant milestone for both Mikhail and the Garo tribe, as he becomes one of the few artists from the Northeast to contribute to a globally celebrated film production.
With Shape of Momo gaining momentum across festivals, Mikhail Marak’s work is expected to draw even more attention to the vibrant and evolving landscape of Indian independent cinema and indigenous talent.
