25-Ft tall statue of U Tirot Sing unveiled in Nongkhlaw

Shillong, July 18: A life size statue of legendary freedom fighter U Tirot Sing Syiem erected by the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) was unveiled at Laitarted, Nongkhlaw Syiemship, Eastern West Khasi Hills on Thursday as a mark of paying rich tribute to him on his 190th death anniversary.

The 25 feet tall statue standing atop a hill on a plot of land donated by the Dorbar Shnong of Laitarted was unveiled by Dr KM Syiemlieh, Deputy Syiem, Hima Nongkhlaw along with the president of HYC-CEC  Roy Kupar Synrem in the presence of members from Khasi-Jaintia Hills and members of the public during a function to commemorate the day.

This was also followed by a programme to celebrate the HYC’s 11th year Foundation Day with activities ranging from performances from various popular artistes of the Hynniewtrep Community like Wanjop Sohkhlet, Khmih Creative Society, Thunder’s Cave, Akbarlang Nongdhar and the Band Snowhite.

Awards were also given to youths from the Community who excelled in the Class X and Class XII examination from various Boards.

Special recognition was also given to Miss Rifiness Warjri, the youth who climbed the Mount Everest and became the youngest person from the State to achieved the feat.

The Program was attended by members of the organization from across the Khasi-Jaintia Hills alongwith former leaders like Bah Robertjune Kharjahrin and Bah Peter Lawai besides the supporters and well-wishers of the organization turning in thousands to be part of this memorable event in the story of the organization.

Speaking on the occasion, the President of HYC Roy Kupar said the statue serves as a reminder of the courage and determination of U Tirot Sing in defending his land and people.

“We want the country to give him due space he deserves in the modern history books. He fought for our rights, our identity, and our land from the colonial forces. This monolith is our tribute to U Tirot Sing and all unsung heroes of the Khasi resistance,” Synrem said.

He also stated that HYC is not against development activities in the State but wants the State Government to balance development with protection of our tribe. “No development at the cost of losing our identity and becoming minority in our land in the absence of laws regulating influx into the State”.
