Shillong July 7: The 4th Sohra International Half Marathon is all set to take place on September 27, in Sohra (Cherrapunji).

The event is being organised by the Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA) in collaboration with the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, and the Meghalaya Athletics Association. It is officially recognised by World Athletics and the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).

At a press briefing on Monday, D.D. Shira, Director of Sports & Youth Affairs, John F. Kharshiing, Working President of MSOA, and Finely Pariat, MSOA General Secretary, invited athletes from Meghalaya and beyond to join the marathon, which continues to promote fitness, tourism, and sportsmanship in the state.

Shira said preparations are underway with full support from local Dorbar Shnongs in Sohra, the police, the Sohra sub-divisional office, and other departments. “We aim to make this year’s marathon a grand success,” he said.

Kharshiing urged interested participants to register before the September 10 deadline, saying the event not only promotes fitness but also showcases Meghalaya as a tourist destination.

Pariat revealed that last year’s event attracted around 7,000 runners, and this year they expect over 10,000 participants. He highlighted the event’s total prize money of ₹15.50 lakh, making it one of the most rewarding marathons in the region. The overall budget stands at ₹2 crore, covering logistics and technical arrangements.

Importantly, Sohra residents can join the 5K Run for Fun without any entry fee, encouraging local participation.

Race Categories:

• 21K Elite Open & Meghalayan (18+ years)
• 10K Open (18–59 years)
• 5K Run for Fun (open to all)

A special award will also be given to participants above 50 years who complete the 21K race.

Route & Logistics:

The race will begin at Laitsohpliah (6 km before Mawkdok bridge) and finish at Mawsmai, near the iconic Nohsngithiang Falls viewpoint.

To ensure safety, roads leading to Sohra from Shillong will remain closed from 6 AM to 10 AM on race day.

All runners and staff will be provided free transportation from Shillong, departing at 3 AM.

• ₹200 for 10K
• ₹50 for 5K Run for Fun
• Last date to register: September 10, 2025
• How to register: Online or offline at MSOA Office (JN Stadium, Shillong) and Sohra Shop (near Lad Thanad Petrol Pump)

Participants can collect their T-shirts and bib numbers on September 25 and 26 at JN Stadium, Shillong. Those joining the 5K from Sohra can collect theirs locally on September 26.
