5.4 magnitude earthquake hits Meghalaya, rattles buildings

Shillong, Aug 14: A moderate earthquake measuring 5.4 on richter scale hit Meghalaya on Monday evening, rattling the buildings, sending people running out of their homes.

The epicentre of the quake was traced at a depth of 16 kilometre in Sylhet, Bangladesh, and hit at around 8:19 PM. The location is 49km South East of Sohra, East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya.

The quake lasted for almost 6 seconds and came in two waves, the initial jolts being a low intensity one followed by a much stronger moderate intensity one.

The jolt was so strong that people ran out of their houses in Shillong city.

The effects of the quake were felt in several parts of North East including Dibrugarh, Tinsukia in Assam, Aizawl in Mizoram and Agartala in Tripura, Manipur, North Bengal.
