5 vendors died in a road accident in Shillong bypass

Shillong, Oct 17: In a tragic incident five people lost their lives at Umkhen – Thangshalai Shillong bypass road in East Khasi Hills on Saturday morning, when a speeding truck hit their roadside vegetable shed.

All the deceased were from Thangshalai village under Mawryngkneng block.

Police said a bamboo-loaded truck bearing registration number UP 51AT 2949, while proceeding from Mawryngkneng towards Guwahati via Shillong by-pass hit against one dumper-truck bearing registration number ML 05R 4937 at Umkhen bridge in Thangshalai.

After hitting the dumper, the truck went off the road and hit the five roadside vendors. The truck has been intercepted but the driver managed to escape. Four died on the spot, while one succumbed to injuries on the way to the hospital.

The deceased who died on the spot is identified as Balarihun Kharkongor (27), Gracefully Nongbri (23), Banteibha Bina (28), Shantilang Nongbri (28), and one Korbarsing Kharduit (52) was critically injured, and he died while on his way to the hospital.
