Guwahati, Nov 5: Fifty boats sailed majestically on the Tuni River in Majuli, the world’s largest river island, on Wednesday to pay tribute to Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika on his 14th death anniversary.
The programme, titled “Let us sail the Tuni with the divine name of Vaikuntha,” beautifully combined reverence for the legendary musician with the ongoing Raas Mahotsav celebrations.
Conceptualised by Majuli MLA Bhuban Gam and organised by the Majuli district administration, the event took place on the second day of the Raas Mahotsav. The Tuni River, considered the lifeline of Majuli, came alive with devotional fervour as boats carried participants engaged in Nam-Kirtan (chanting the Lord’s name).
The river procession showcased Majuli’s rich cultural heritage through displays of its world-famous masks, creating a stunning visual spectacle that blended spiritual devotion with artistic expression.
Devotees gathered along both banks of the Tuni River, joining in unison to sing the divine name of Hari, creating an atmosphere of collective celebration and reverence.
Several Satradhikars (heads of Vaishnavite monasteries) from across Majuli participated in the event, along with various cultural groups and organisations.
Meanwhile, the 14th death anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika was also commemorated with a magnificent chorus performance at Chowkidinghee Playground in Dibrugarh, where around 5,000 people gathered to sing the maestro’s immortal composition “Manuhe Manuhor Babe.”
The event was jointly organised by the Dibrugarh District Administration and the Department of Cultural Affairs. The massive gathering included participants of all ages—from small children to elderly citizens—who united their voices in tribute to the “Bard of the Brahmaputra.”
