Boko, Nov 5: In a major breakthrough against organized cattle smuggling, Kamrup district police have arrested a notorious criminal and alleged mastermind of a cross-border cattle syndicate, identified as Akram Ali.
The arrest was made during a late-night operation at Kanhara under the jurisdiction of Goroimari Police Station on Monday.
According to police sources, the operation led to the seizure of 112 cattle, a Scorpio vehicle (AS 22 H 6489), ₹90,000 in cash.
The arrested accused, along with the recovered cattle, has been brought to Rani Police Outpost for further investigation.
A well-organized syndicate
Police officials revealed that Akram Ali had been controlling a large cattle smuggling network operating from the char areas of South Kamrup.
The syndicate allegedly supplied hundreds of cattle to Bangladesh through the Assam–Meghalaya border and even via riverine routes across the Brahmaputra.

For the past several months, reports indicated that 9–10 Bolero pickup vans were regularly transporting 100–150 cattle per night from Goroimari, Sonatoli, and Hatipara areas via National Highway 17. The vehicles reportedly crossed through Rani, Joypur, and Sukurbaria before entering Meghalaya, from where the cattle were smuggled into Bangladesh.
Local residents of Rani informed that such movements often took place between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m., raising concerns about law and order in the border belt.
Intensified Police Action
The Kamrup district police, under the leadership of senior officials, have now launched a full-scale crackdown on the illegal cattle trade. Authorities have assured that further action will be taken to dismantle the syndicate’s network and bring all those involved to justice.
Observers note that the success of this operation will be a test of how effectively law enforcement can curb the entrenched cattle smuggling racket that has plagued the Assam–Meghalaya border for years.
The arrest of Akram Ali marks a significant step in the fight against organized cattle smuggling. However, sustained vigilance, strict enforcement of border regulations, and coordinated action with neighboring states will be crucial to ensure that such illegal trade does not resurface.
