SHILLONG, OCT 9: The body of a 7-year-old boy, identified as Kyrshanbor Kharmudai, was recovered from a forest at Mawpat on Thursday morning. The boy had gone missing from Lum Myrboh Nongrah on Wednesday at around 4 pm.

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed that the case is a homicide and an investigation is underway.

“All indications point to a homicide, and the post-mortem will provide a clearer picture of the kind of injury,” Syiem told reporters.

The police have launched a probe into the matter, and a case will be registered.

The formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) is likely, given the nature of the crime.

“We will sit down as this also will warrant the requirement of SIT because it is a child who has been murdered…,” Syiem added.

According to the SP, preliminary investigation has suggested that the body was placed at the location where it was recovered.

This is the second incident where a child from Nongrah was found dead.

Last month, a 13-year-old boy was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) for his alleged involvement in the recent tragic death of a 4-year-old girl at Nongrah Nonglum Brei.

The girl identified as Insaphira Lyngdoh Mawnai was reportedly gone missing from her residence at 8am on September 14. Her body was found from a nearby construction site on September 15.

Asked, Syiem stated that while it’s too early to rule out any connection with other cases, the police will investigate all possibilities.

“Right now, I don’t see a connection. It could be an isolated case because the accused of the first case is already been ascertained and identified but nonetheless, we will investigate and find out everything into the matter,” he assured.

The incident has raised concerns among citizens, and Syiem emphasized the need for vigilance and precautionary measures, such as installing CCTVs, lighting public areas, and monitoring children. He also urged locals to report any suspicious activity to the police emergency number 112.
