Guwahati, Feb 10: The 87th Meeting of the Brahmaputra Board approved a series of major flood control, erosion mitigation and master planning initiatives across the Brahmaputra and Barak basins.
The meeting, chaired by Dr Ranbir Singh, Chairman of the Brahmaputra Board, was held in Shillong and attended by senior officials from the Centre and all Northeastern states, including West Bengal.
Among the key decisions was the approval of multiple detailed project reports (DPRs) and studies targeting vulnerable river stretches across the region.
These include a comprehensive assessment of riverbank erosion and prioritisation of mitigation strategies for the Brahmaputra basin, cross-section and geodetic surveys of the Jiadhal River in Arunachal Pradesh to determine drainage mapping and physiographic parameters, preparation of DPRs for desilting Baguwa Cherra and constructing a sluice gate in Tripura’s Chandipur block, flood and bank erosion mitigation measures at 13 vulnerable sites along the Barak River in Silchar (Cachar), Assam, development and renovation of a local pond in Imphal East district, Manipur, field surveys for mathematical modelling of Majuli Island to prepare Phase-VI protection works, updation of the Master Plan of Majuli Island and landscape development of the Basistha riverfront adjacent to the Brahmaputra Board campus in Guwahati.
The Board also approved the Annual Action Plan and detailed budget allocation for 2026–27, signalling stepped-up implementation in the coming financial year.
In a notable strategic move, the Board decided to include three additional basin master plans — Dibang–Disang, Noa-Dihing, and Rangit — taking the total number of master plans under the Board to 76.
Presentations were made on the status of handing over completed projects to state governments and on the Standard Operating Procedure (SoP) for preparation of master plans, indicating a focus on institutional streamlining and long-term planning.
Members from various state governments shared updates on action taken following the December 12, 2025, review meeting chaired by the Secretary, Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation (DoWR, RD & GR), as well as the December 10, 2025, visit to Majuli Island.
States also briefed the Board on ongoing flood and erosion control schemes being implemented locally.
Reiterating the Board’s commitment, Chairman Dr Ranbir Singh said the institution remains focused on supporting basin states in achieving effective and sustainable water resource management across the Northeast.
The next, 88th meeting of the Brahmaputra Board will be held in Guwahati.
