Tura, Feb 10: The Tura Hindu Samshan Bhoomi Committee (THSBC) successfully organized the formal dedication ceremony of its newly acquired Mortuary Van Service at the Parade Ground in Tura on Tuesday.
The event was graced by Thomas A. Sangma, Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, as the Chief Guest.
The ceremony marked a significant milestone for the community, introducing a specialized vehicle equipped with a refrigerated body box to ensure a dignified final journey for the deceased.
Speaking on the occasion, Thomas A. Sangma, expressed his immense happiness and satisfaction that a refrigerated mortuary van is now in place for the public.
Highlighting the importance of such a facility in the region, he commended the committee’s proactive efforts. In a notable gesture of continued support, the Speaker also offered to personally bear the monthly remuneration of the van driver, ensuring the smooth operation of the service.
Earlier, while delivering the welcome address, the President of THSBC Prabin Panthi lauded the Chief Guest for his unwavering support.
He stated that the community has always looked up to Thomas A. Sangma whenever a need was felt, and he has consistently delivered on his promises, describing him as a pillar of strength for the people of Tura.
The service is now officially open to the public with the following subsidized rates. For Tura Residents: ₹500, Rongram Residents: ₹1,000.
The program concluded with the formal flag-off of the vehicle, followed by light refreshments for all attendees.
The THSBC Executive Committee expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the Speaker and the citizens of Tura for making the event a resounding success.
