Tura, Sept 26: The All Garo Hills Multipurpose Co-operative Society Ltd. (AGHMPCS), under the FOCUS initiative, successfully organised a two-day celebration programme titled “Celebrating the Fruits of PG Farming: From Fields to Festivity” on September 23 and 24, bringing together over 110 Producer Groups (PGs) and nearly 700 farmers and participants from across the region.
The first day of the programme, held at Aguragre GS Circle, was graced by Assistant Engineer B.K. Marak, representing the BDO of Rongram Block, along with representatives from MBMA and AGHMPCS. Addressing the gathering, Marak underscored the importance of empowering farmers and strengthening PGs, describing agriculture as the backbone of the Indian economy. He called for effective marketing strategies and urged PGs to consider how their farming practices impact people, the future, and the environment.

The day featured presentations by 10 high-performing PGs, reflections from volunteers, plantation drives, and the inauguration of exhibition stalls showcasing PG products. Technical sessions provided guidance on natural and organic farming, financial inclusion through banking and e-banking, and environmental protection. Rev. Dr. Sunny Joseph Marvelil, Secretary of AGHMPCS, stressed the need for mindful consumption, remarking, “Cultivate what you can eat and eat what you cultivate.”
On the second day at Baljek Agal GS Circle, Kitt Mittler N. Sangma, District Development Manager of NABARD, attended as the chief guest. He highlighted NABARD’s ongoing rural development initiatives and introduced the upcoming Tribal Development Fund (TDF) project on piggery. He also encouraged PGs to explore new opportunities for growth. Other speakers reinforced the importance of organising PGs sustainably and ensuring long-term development.
Participants shared that they had received financial support which was being effectively channelled into developmental activities, with CAG audits already underway to ensure transparency. AGHMPCS reiterated its commitment to supporting PGs across all nine blocks under its coverage, with plans to expand similar initiatives to strengthen food sustainability in Garo Hills.
The two-day programme served as a platform for farmers and PGs to showcase their resilience, achievements and innovations while drawing guidance from experts.
