Guwahati, April 11: Badruddin Ajmal on Friday raised serious concerns over “abnormally high” voter turnout in parts of Assam, alleging possible electoral irregularities and calling for a thorough investigation into the polling process.
Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, the All India United Democratic Front chief pointed to turnout figures reportedly exceeding 90% in certain constituencies, claiming that in some polling stations, the number of votes cast appeared to surpass expected capacity.
“There are reports of thousands voting in locations designed for only a few hundred. This needs serious investigation,” Ajmal said, alleging that individuals may have been brought in from outside the state to influence the outcome—claims that remain unverified.
He warned that if credible evidence of malpractice emerges, his party would consider legal action, including moving the Supreme Court. Ajmal also urged election authorities to audit voter lists, polling data, and turnout patterns to ensure transparency and credibility.
Reiterating his party’s stance, Ajmal ruled out any alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party, citing ideological differences, while expressing confidence that the AIUDF could secure 15–16 seats.
Shifting focus to education, Ajmal sharply criticized Assam’s school system in the wake of the recent HSLC (matric) results, describing the disparity between government and private institutions as a “systemic failure.”
While congratulating successful students, he highlighted that pass percentages in several government schools reportedly remained in single digits, compared to significantly higher success rates—touching nearly 98%—in private and foundation-backed institutions.
“If the education department continues to fail at this level, how can Assam progress?” he asked, stressing that education is central to long-term development.
Calling for urgent reforms, Ajmal proposed exploring Public-Private Partnership (PPP) models if the government is unable to deliver quality education. He also said institutions supported by his foundation are willing to contribute through improved curriculum, teacher training, and structured academic programs.
The AIUDF leader further condemned reported incidents of violence against journalists during the election period, terming them “unacceptable in a democratic society,” and called for stronger protections for media personnel.
Framing his remarks as both a warning and a call for accountability, Ajmal underscored the twin priorities of safeguarding electoral integrity and fixing the state’s education system.
