Guwahati, April 11: Assam’s 2026 Assembly elections recorded a massive 85.91% voter turnout, the highest till now, driven by delimitation-led competitive contests, a cleaner electoral roll, and unprecedented grassroots mobilisation.
The recent delimitation exercise reshaped constituency boundaries and demographic balances, intensifying contests and pushing voter participation across regions. The revision of electoral rolls, which removed duplicate and deceased entries, further boosted turnout by ensuring a more accurate voter base.
Polling remained largely peaceful, with smooth voting and orderly queues reported statewide, reinforcing voter confidence. Campaigning also took on a festival-like tone, combining political outreach with cultural engagement.
A key highlight was the surge in women voters, with turnout in several constituencies crossing 85% and, in many cases, surpassing male participation—signalling a significant shift in Assam’s electoral landscape.
District-wise, Dhubri recorded one of the highest turnouts at 95.18%, closely followed by South Salmara Mankachar (95.61%), while Barpeta (93.32%), Goalpara (93.26%), and Bongaigaon (92.77%) also crossed the 90% mark.
In contrast, Kamrup (Metro) reported a lower 77.51%, along with West Karbi Anglong (78.67%) and Tinsukia (79.36%), reflecting the urban-rural turnout gap.
A late surge in voting hours pushed the overall turnout close to 86%, underlining strong voter enthusiasm, particularly in tightly contested seats.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma termed the polls a “movement,” citing record participation, while state Congress president Gaurav Gogoi pointed to increased turnout and expressed confidence of a political shift.
Badruddin Ajmal has raised serious concerns over “abnormally high” voter turnout in parts of Assam, alleging possible electoral irregularities and calling for a thorough investigation into the polling process.
“There are reports of thousands voting in locations designed for only a few hundred. This needs serious investigation,” Ajmal said, alleging that individuals may have been brought in from outside the state to influence the outcome—claims that remain unverified.
With high-stakes contests and record participation across districts, Assam now heads into counting day with heightened anticipation, as the turnout surge could translate into a decisive electoral outcome.
