BSF jawan killed in militant firing in Manipur’s Ukhrul

Must read

Guwahati,  April 11: A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan was killed in an unprovoked militant attack in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Friday, prompting intensified search operations by security forces in the region.

The deceased has been identified as Constable Mithun Mandal of the 170 Battalion, hailing from Bhagjan Tola village in West Bengal.

According to Manipur Police, militants opened heavy fire on a BSF team in the Litan area, leading to Mandal sustaining critical injuries. He was later shifted to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal, where he succumbed.

Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh strongly condemned the attack, stating that the jawan was fatally injured by a bullet fired from an unknown direction while on patrol at Mongkot Chepu in Ukhrul.

“A brave son of West Bengal, his sacrifice in the line of duty will never be forgotten,” the Chief Minister said, extending condolences to the bereaved family.

Former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh also expressed grief over the incident, terming it a “cowardly militant attack” and asserting that such acts of violence would not deter efforts to restore peace.

Security forces have launched extensive search operations and area domination exercises in and around the Litan region to track down those responsible for the attack.

The incident underscores the continuing security challenges in parts of Manipur, particularly in hill districts like Ukhrul, where sporadic militant activity has persisted.
