Shillong, June 21: Meghalaya Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh on Saturday visited the construction site of the upcoming Tura Medical College and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expediting work on what will be the first medical college in the Garo Hills region.

Accompanied by senior officials, Lyngdoh conducted a detailed review of the ongoing construction, evaluated pending infrastructure needs, and instructed departments to address critical bottlenecks that have delayed the project.
Officials informed the Minister that Phase 1 of construction is 75% complete, while Phase 2 is progressing steadily. Water supply infrastructure has reached the site and is expected to be functional soon, enabling the next stage of development.
A crucial component—the 1.7-kilometre approach road—is 70% complete. Officials said the road will be essential not only for facilitating construction activity but also for ensuring seamless access once the college becomes operational.
The Electrical Substation (ESS) building is structurally complete but awaits energisation. The Finance Department is currently processing the required file, after which the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) will initiate the 33 KVA power connection.
Although the original deadline for completion was December 2025, the timeline has now been extended to March 2026. Officials attributed the delay to site-specific challenges and procedural clearances.
Addressing the media after her visit, Lyngdoh said the government is determined to strengthen medical education and healthcare delivery in the region.

“This visit was about tracking key milestones, resolving pending issues, and reaffirming our commitment to bringing quality medical education and healthcare to the Garo Hills,” she said.
She added that the medical college will open new academic and employment avenues for youth in western Meghalaya and significantly improve access to healthcare.
“The college will not only empower aspiring doctors from the region but also reduce the need for patients to travel long distances for education and treatment,” Lyngdoh said.
