Tura, June 21: The highly anticipated 1st Tura Challenge Inter-Mahari Basketball Tournament 2025 officially tipped off on Friday at Don Bosco College basketball court in Tura.
Sponsored by the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K. Sangma, the tournament is a collaborative effort between the Krimkro Socio Cultural Club New Tura, the District Sports Office, Tura, and the District Basketball Association (DBA).

This 10-day event, running until June 30th, is also part of the Krimkro Socio Cultural Club’s 25th-year anniversary festivities, aiming to foster camaraderie among the diverse ‘Maharis’ (clans) of Garo Hills and seeks to promote healthy lifestyle through sports among the youths.
The inaugural day featured three entertaining matches. In the men’s category, the Agitok Mahari team secured a dominant victory over the Mrong Mahari team, finishing with a commanding score of 75-44.

The women’s category showcased two captivating contests. In the first game, the Gabil Mahari team narrowly defeated the Bolwari Mahari team 16-12 in a nail-biting finish. Gabil Mahari had maintained a lead through the first three quarters, but Bolwari mounted a strong comeback in the final quarter, briefly taking the lead before Gabil surged ahead once more to clinch the win.
The second women’s match saw Mrong Mahari maintain their lead until the fourth quarter. Though Rangsa Mahari launched a determined scoring surge in the final minutes, they ultimately fell short, with Mrong Mahari triumphing 16-13, capping off a thrilling start to the tournament.

A total of 10 women’s teams and 16 men’s teams are participating in this grand ‘Tura Challenge’, promising a series of competitive and engaging games over the next nine days.
The opening ceremony was graced by Saljagring M Marak, District Sports Officer, Tura; Walseng Ch Sangma, President of the Krimkro Socio Cultural Club and Fr. Januarius S. Sangma, SDB Principal of Don Bosco College, where they offered encouraging words, reinforcing the role of sports in community development.

A significant part of the ceremony included an awareness session on the “Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan” by the District Social Welfare Office, highlighting the importance of a drug-free society.
