Assam: Bhupen Borah sets conditions before AICC, awaits feedback as Congress rejects resignation

Must read

Guwahati, Feb 16: Senior Congress leader Bhupen Borah has placed certain conditions before the All India Congress Committee (AICC) and is awaiting a response from the party high command before taking a final call on his political future.

Speaking to reporters, Borah said he had communicated several concerns about the functioning of the Assam Congress to the central leadership.

“The high command was not aware of many things happening within the Assam Congress. I had to write to them. Today, senior party leaders met me and we discussed the matter. I have sought one day to reflect. Tomorrow, I will meet Jitendra Singh again and convey my final decision,” Borah said.

He added that depending on the feedback from the leadership, he would also consult his family and well-wishers before arriving at a final decision.

Party sources indicated that Borah has raised concerns with the AICC regarding the functioning of the Assam unit under state Congress president Gaurav Gogoi.

According to sources, Borah alleged that Gogoi primarily relies on MP Rakibul Hussain and sidelines other senior leaders in key decisions — a charge that has intensified internal tensions ahead of the Assembly elections.

The episode has brought to the fore simmering factional differences within the Assam Congress at a politically sensitive time.

Meanwhile, the Indian National Congress has formally rejected Borah’s resignation following detailed discussions in New Delhi.

Assam Congress in-charge Jitendra Singh confirmed that the matter was resolved through dialogue.

Singh thanked Borah for reconsidering his resignation and continuing with the party, describing him as an important member of the Congress family. He said differences of opinion within a party are natural and should be addressed through discussion.

According to Singh, the resignation submitted to party president Mallikarjun Kharge was not accepted by the high command.

Senior leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, reportedly held extensive discussions with Borah before the issue was settled.

Borah, who has been associated with the Congress for nearly three decades, had stepped down amid internal differences within the state unit — a move that triggered speculation about deepening rifts in the Assam Congress ahead of the crucial Assembly elections.

While the central leadership appears keen to contain the fallout, Borah’s conditional stance suggests that underlying structural issues within the state unit may still require resolution.
