NPP drops sitting GHADC chief Albinush Marak, cites ‘winnability’ concerns

Shillong, Feb 16: The National People’s Party (NPP) has denied a ticket to Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) chief Albinush Marak, citing doubts over his winnability in the upcoming polls.

“We have denied ticket to the sitting CEM, who is also representing Siju constituency… It was with great difficulty we came to this decision because the question of winnability is also there,” NPP working president and cabinet minister Marcuise N Marak told reporters on Monday.

“(However), we are requesting his cooperation with the party’s decision,” he said.

Marak said the party released its first list of 24 candidates for the GHADC elections, selected based on “winnability, loyalty, and past political experiences.” He added that the state election committee, led by Prestone Tynsong, approved the list after the regional committee’s recommendations.

“We took a report from different sources… It was very difficult on our part to reject anybody from the list,” Marak said, adding that up to seven applicants vied for tickets in some constituencies.

Party national chief Conrad K Sangma and senior leaders personally met candidates seeking tickets, he said.

“We have been meeting them and consulting with them so that we get their support and cooperation in the forthcoming elections.”
