Shillong, Feb 16: The Centre’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications has set up a 5G Use Case Lab at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Meghalaya.
The DoT is driving the establishment of 5G Use Case Labs nationwide to accelerate innovation and adoption of next-gen telecom technologies.

The lab provides students and researchers hands-on experience with 5G networks, IoT, AI, edge computing, and emerging telecom applications.
In the North Eastern region , a total of eight 5G Use Case Labs have been established, significantly strengthening the regional innovation and research ecosystem.
These labs serve as collaborative platforms for academic institutions, startups, industry, and researchers to develop, test, and validate innovative 5G-based use cases across various sectors.
The 5G Use Case Lab initiative aligns with the Government’s vision of Digital India and Atmanirbhar Bharat, promoting innovation, enhancing youth capabilities, and strengthening the domestic telecom ecosystem.
These labs are expected to contribute to development of applications in sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, smart infrastructure, and disaster management, which are particularly relevant to the North Eastern region.
