Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma urges calm, warns against politicising Zubeen Garg Case

Must read

Guwahati, Oct 15: Amid rising tensions and violent protests outside Baksa District Jail, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday appealed for peace and urged the public not to let emotions over the Zubeen Garg death case be exploited for political purposes.

Addressing reporters in Guwahati, Sarma said, “There are some people who have created an extraordinary atmosphere in Assam. Their constant efforts will harm the state, never improve it.” He cautioned that certain individuals were attempting to “pursue their political interests by undermining the environment of peace, progress, and development” built over the past five years.

Referring to the clashes outside Baksa Jail — where protesters hurled stones and damaged vehicles during the transfer of the accused — the Chief Minister expressed regret over the incident. “I deeply feel sorry for what happened,” he said, adding that such unrest only detracts from the pursuit of justice.

Sarma called upon citizens to place their faith in the judicial system, reminding them that due process takes time. “In a civilized society like ours, we must trust the courts to deliver justice. After the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, it took one to two years for the court to punish Nathuram Godse. Justice may take time, but it always prevails,” he said.

The Chief Minister also accused “certain political parties” of trying to provoke emotions among Zubeen Garg’s fans for political mileage. “These attempts to manipulate genuine public sentiment for political gain are unfortunate,” he remarked, urging people not to be misled by misinformation or emotional appeals circulating on social media.

Reiterating his government’s commitment, Sarma assured that every step would be taken in accordance with the law to ensure justice for the late singer. “No one is above the law, and justice will be done,” he affirmed.

Tension had gripped Baksa on Wednesday after news spread that the five accused in the case — Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharth Sharma, APS officer Sandipan Garg, and two personal security officers, Nandeshwar Bora and Paresh Baishya — were being transferred to Baksa Jail following their remand to judicial custody.

An agitated crowd gathered near the main gate of the jail, shouting slogans demanding justice for Zubeen Garg and pelting stones at security personnel. Police later brought the situation under control.
