Dibrugarh, July 23: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday remarked that while his life may come to an end, vacating the vast stretches of encroached land in the state will remain a difficult task.
Talking to reporters in Dibrugarh, CM Sarma said, “Twenty-nine lakh bighas (nine lakh acres) of land have been encroached in Assam till date. My life may end, but it will not be fully vacated.” He agreed that removing encroachment is a very difficult task in Assam.
He added that an eviction drive will soon begin at Uriamghat in Golaghat district and that encroached land in eastern Assam will be cleared.
Sarma further claimed that, based on empirical data and past census records, the minority population in the state is projected to reach nearly 50% in the coming years.
Citing the 2011 Census, Sarma stated that minorities currently constitute 34% of Assam’s population.
Excluding the 3% indigenous Assamese Muslims, he said the percentage of Muslims who migrated to the state stands at 31%.
“If you project that based on 2021 data and trends expected in 2031, you arrive at an almost 50-50 population ratio,” the Chief Minister stated.
Emphasising that his assertion was grounded in official records, he said, “This is not my opinion. I am just stating what is in the statistical census report.”
