Guwahati, May 26: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday issued a pointed response to those who “habitually threaten” India over its narrow Siliguri Corridor, also known as the Chicken’s Neck, by highlighting Bangladesh’s own geographic vulnerabilities.
Taking to X, Sarma said, “Bangladesh has two of its own ‘chicken necks’. Both are far more vulnerable.”
To those who habitually threaten India on the “Chicken Neck Corridor”, should note these facts as well:
1️⃣ Bangladesh has two of its own “chicken necks”. Both are far more vulnerable
2️⃣ First is the 80 Km North Bangladesh Corridor- from Dakhin Dinajpur to South West Garo… pic.twitter.com/DzV3lUAOhR

He cited the 80-km North Bangladesh Corridor, stretching from Dakshin Dinajpur in West Bengal to South West Garo Hills in Meghalaya. “Any disruption here can completely isolate the entire Rangpur division from the rest of Bangladesh,” he noted.

He also pointed to the 28-km Chittagong Corridor, linking South Tripura to the Bay of Bengal. “This corridor, smaller than India’s chicken neck, is the only link between Bangladesh’s economic capital and political capital,” Sarma added.
“Just like India’s Siliguri Corridor, our neighbouring country is also embedded with two narrow corridors of theirs. These are geographical facts that some may tend to forget,” he said.
The remarks appear to be a response to recent comments by Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor and Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, who during a visit to China described India’s Northeast as “landlocked” and Bangladesh as the region’s “only guardian to the ocean.”

The exchange unfolds amid reports of China assisting Bangladesh in reviving a World War II-era airbase in Lalmonirhat, just 100 km from the Siliguri Corridor—raising fresh concerns in India’s strategic circles.
Responding to Sarma’s post, Tripura Motha Party chief Pradyot Manikya Debbarma said, “Dear @himantabiswa dada, I’ve been saying the same thing. It’s just that I’ve been slightly more blunt… The Northeast of India needs its own beach! After all, you have yourself stated it’s just a few kms away. Why can’t we speak from a position of strength in the interest of our country and region?”
