Assam Congress demands CBI probe into Gorukhuti project irregularities

Must read

Guwahati, July 3: The Assam Congress has demanded a CBI inquiry into alleged irregularities in the Gorukhuti Multipurpose Agriculture Project, particularly concerning the sale of 90 Gir cows to private individuals, including relatives of BJP leaders and party functionaries.

Addressing the media, senior Congress leader and former MP Ram Prasad Sarmah alleged that public funds were grossly misused under the pretext of promoting agriculture and dairy production.

“There have been widespread irregularities and corruption in the Gorukhuti agricultural project. There is a clear mismatch in the statements made by Padma Hazarika, the project chairman, and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma,” Sarmah claimed.

He said the government launched the project on over 77,000 bighas of land after evicting Indian citizens, and spent nearly Rs 25 crore on it.

After granting Padma Hazarika cabinet status and investing substantial public funds, the government had raised public expectations of job creation and dairy self-sufficiency through Gir cow farming.

The Gorukhuti Multipurpose Agriculture Project was initiated following a massive eviction drive in 2021 to remove alleged encroachers—mostly Bengali-speaking Muslims—during which two persons, including a 12-year-old boy, were killed.

Sarmah asserted that while the Chief Minister tried to defend the project, MLA Hazarika stated that the Agriculture Department had misled him on several fronts.
