Assam: Elephant calf dies after falling into abandoned well

Must read

Guwahati, June 10: A 7-month-old wild elephant calf died after falling into an abandoned well at Ouguri village under the Bamunigaon Forest Range in Assam’s Chaygaon on Monday.

Forest officials recovered the lifeless body of the calf from the uncovered well.

“The calf was part of a herd of wild elephants that had strayed into the area and may have fallen into the well during their movement,” said a forest official.

A veterinary team was dispatched to the location, and a post-mortem examination was conducted on-site.

The veterinary team did not find any external injuries on the calf.

“It’s a very tragic incident. The calf was part of an elephant herd and may have fallen into the uncovered well while the herd was moving through the area. We have instructed villagers to cover all unused wells, as elephant movement has been frequently reported in village areas,” the forest official added.
