Guwahati, March 15: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday inaugurated a series of major healthcare and medical education projects in Assam, asserting that the state has emerged as a key hub for advanced healthcare services in the Northeast under the “double-engine” government.

The projects were launched at an event in Guwahati in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other senior officials.
Addressing the gathering, Shah said Assam’s healthcare system has undergone a major transformation over the past decade, claiming that the state now rivals developed states such as Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka in medical infrastructure.
“About ten years ago, healthcare services across the Northeast were in a very poor condition. Today, Assam is emerging as a major centre for critical healthcare services, including cancer treatment,” he said.
Among the key projects inaugurated was the Pragjyotishpur Medical College and Hospital, built at a cost of about ₹675 crore. Shah also inaugurated the Golaghat Cancer Centre and Tinsukia Cancer Centre, each constructed at a cost of ₹135 crore.

Other projects launched include the Diphu Medical College and Hospital (₹220 crore), Barpeta Medical College and Hospital (₹284 crore), and Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (₹310 crore).
Additionally, the foundation stones were laid for the Six Mile Swasthya Bhavan in Guwahati, estimated to cost ₹218 crore, and the Abhayapuri District Hospital, with an investment of ₹115 crore.
Shah said these initiatives would strengthen healthcare access across Barak Valley, Upper Assam, Central Assam and Lower Assam, ensuring that patients no longer have to travel to cities like Chennai, Mumbai or Delhi for advanced treatment.
The Home Minister said Assam is set to become the first state in India to provide Proton Cancer Therapy in a government hospital, calling it a major milestone for the Northeast.
The advanced cancer treatment facility, estimated to cost ₹400 crore, will significantly reduce the need for patients to travel outside the region for specialised care.
Highlighting the expansion of medical education in the state, Shah said the number of medical colleges in Assam has increased sharply in recent years.
“Earlier there were only six medical colleges in Assam. Now there are 14, and ten more are planned. In total, Assam will have 24 medical colleges,” he said.
According to Shah, MBBS seats in the state have increased from 726 to 1,825, enabling more students, particularly from economically weaker sections, to pursue medical education.
He also said the health budget for Assam has increased from ₹4,000 crore to ₹9,000 crore under the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
