Assam: Former APCC chief Bhupen Borah  claims ‘many nationalist’ Congress leaders to join BJP before March 8

Guwahati, Feb 21: In a significant political development ahead of the upcoming political churn in Assam, former Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Kumar Borah on Friday claimed that several “nationalist” Congress leaders would join the BJP before March 8.

Borah, who recently switched to the BJP citing dissatisfaction with the functioning of the state Congress unit, made the remarks after meeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

“The respect I received in 32 minutes, I did not get in 32 years in the Congress,” Borah told reporters, referring to his half-hour meeting with Shah.

According to Borah, the meeting focused on the current political situation in Assam. “I assured Amit Shah that before March 8, many nationalist Congress leaders will join the BJP,” he said.

He also thanked Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for facilitating the meeting with the Union Home Minister.

Taking a swipe at the Congress leadership, Borah remarked that although he respects Priyanka Gandhi, she appeared “worried” and “not smiling” during her recent two-day visit to Assam.

Borah also responded to remarks made by Deputy Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi, who had earlier described him as a “strong pillar” of the Congress.

“Now he is making wrong allegations,” Borah said.

Highlighting past instances of alleged cross-voting within Congress ranks, Borah referred to the 2022 Presidential election when Yashwant Sinha was the opposition’s candidate.

“At that time, 26 Congress MLAs were said to be supporting him, but he got only 20 votes. Where did the six MLAs go?” Borah questioned.

He also cited the Rajya Sabha election involving former Congress candidate Ripun Borah, claiming that seven votes went missing.

“Congress has a history of cross-voting in Rajya Sabha elections,” he alleged.

Reiterating his commitment, Borah said, “I have assured Amit Shah that I will bring many nationalist leaders from Congress to the BJP.”
