Guwahati, March 26: Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota on Thursday reassured the public that there is no shortage of petrol and diesel in the state, highlighting that Assam currently has a 73% surplus of fuel production over consumption. He said that out of the total petrol and diesel produced by the state’s four refineries, Assam consumes only about 27%, clearly indicating that supply remains more than adequate.
According to official data, the average monthly production from the four refineries, including Numaligarh, stands at 168 thousand metric tonnes of petrol (MS) and 403 thousand metric tonnes of diesel (HSD). In contrast, the state’s average monthly consumption is significantly lower, at 63 thousand metric tonnes of petrol and 92 thousand metric tonnes of diesel, resulting in a monthly surplus of 105 thousand metric tonnes of petrol and 311 thousand metric tonnes of diesel.
Emphasising that there is “no reason to panic,” Kota urged people not to indulge in unnecessary bulk buying or hoarding of fuel. He also issued a stern warning against purchasing petrol and diesel in loose or unsafe containers, stating that such practices are both hazardous and illegal.
The police have been instructed to take strict action against violators under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Section 285, which deals with negligent conduct involving combustible materials. In addition, authorities may invoke the Petroleum Act 1934 for illegal storage without a license and the Explosives Act 1884 in cases involving unsafe or hazardous storage conditions, both of which carry stringent penalties, including imprisonment.
The state administration reiterated that the fuel supply chain remains stable and sufficient, and appealed to citizens to maintain normal purchasing behaviour while adhering to safety norms.
