Assam man missing from Arunachal workplace; family fears human trafficking

Must read

Dibrugarh, April 28: A man from Assam’s Biswanath district has gone missing from his workplace in Arunachal Pradesh, with his family alleging possible human trafficking and seeking urgent police intervention.

The missing person, identified as Manik Das, a resident of Gohpur, had reportedly travelled to Rupa near Bomdila in Arunachal Pradesh for work. Family members said he was taken there by an acquaintance, Sujit Nayak, who had promised to arrange employment.

According to the family, Das went missing from his workplace shortly after reaching the hill town, located about 235 km from his home. “When we approached Sujit Nayak, he failed to give any clear explanation and instead threatened us. He only said Manik was missing from the workplace,” Das’s wife alleged.

Since then, there has been no contact or trace of him, heightening fears of foul play. The family suspects he may have been trafficked and possibly sold, a concern they say is not uncommon in border areas where workers are often lured with job offers.

Biswanath Superintendent of Police Ajagwran Basumatary said he has not yet received official information regarding the case.

Visibly distraught, Das’s mother appealed for help, saying the family has received no assistance so far. “We are helpless. We don’t know where my son is,” she said.

Sources claimed that several workers from Assam who travel to Arunachal Pradesh for employment have previously gone missing, with some allegedly forced into labour.

The case comes amid recent action by Arunachal Pradesh Police, who rescued seven women from alleged exploitation in Banderdewa and arrested two persons under the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956.

The family has urged authorities in both states to launch a coordinated investigation and trace Das at the earliest.
