Guwahati, April 28: Assam recorded 4,219 road accidents and 1,008 deaths between January and March 2026, averaging nearly 11 fatalities a day and triggering an urgent push for district-level action.
At a high-level review chaired by Chief Secretary Dr Ravi Kota, officials noted that accident numbers remain almost unchanged from last year, while fatalities dipped only marginally by 2.6%, indicating that crashes continue to be severe.
Nine districts — including Guwahati City, Kamrup, Nagaon, Sonitpur and Dibrugarh — account for nearly half of all deaths. However, districts such as Sonitpur, Nagaon and Tinsukia have shown a decline, credited to targeted enforcement and local interventions.
Pedestrians remain particularly vulnerable, making up one in five fatalities — a trend flagged as a major concern.

Despite a severity index of 0.24, better than the national average, Assam still lags behind relatively safer states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
The Chief Secretary has directed Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police to personally review every fatal accident and implement corrective measures. Immediate fixes at accident-prone “black spots,” improved signage, and safer road engineering have been prioritised.
Enforcement will be intensified on helmet use, drink-driving, speeding and illegal parking, while District Road Safety Committees will prepare data-driven local action plans.
The state is also strengthening “Golden Hour” care under the PM RAHAT scheme, which offers cashless treatment up to ₹1.5 lakh for seven days.

Authorities have been asked to expand trauma care facilities, map healthcare gaps, raise awareness on empanelled hospitals, and complete first responder training.
Calling road safety a “shared responsibility,” officials stressed coordinated action across transport, police, health and public works departments to reduce fatalities.
