Assam – Meghalaya hold DC level meet to quell tension in Lapangap village

Must read

Jowai, Sept 28: After two days of tension at the bordering areas of Assam and Meghalaya where the local communities from both sides clashed over land, a high-level meeting was convened on Thursday to quell the recurrent clashes.

The classes have, of late, been predominantly along Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district inhabited mostly by the Karbi tribe and Meghalaya’s West Jaintia Hills inhabited mostly by the Pnar tribe (Jaintia) due to the complex nature of land ownership in addition to the State boundaries as some of the lands belonging to the Pnars falls on the Assam side and vice-versa.

In an attempt to find lasting solution to the recurrent clashes between both the communities, the District Administrations from both sides of the border met on Thursday. The Meghalaya team was led by West Jaiñtia Hills Deputy Commissioner B S Sohliya and SP C. Syrti, while Assam team was led by West Karbi Anglong District Deputy Commissioner Krishna Baruah and SP I. Barua.

During the meeting, the Karbi side presented their demands, which included the uprooting of tree saplings at Loom Moopyrdet and Loom Pdeinphniar. It was emphasized that only after this condition is met, would the Pnars be allowed to proceed with the harvest of rice from the paddies at Lapangap and Nongjrong.

Additionally, the Assam Police assured that once the Karbis’ demands were addressed, they would provide escort services to ensure the safety of the Pnars during the rice harvesting process in Lapangap and Nongjrong.

Deimon Lyngdoh, the Waheh Chnong of Lapangap, informed that a follow-up meeting will be held on Friday to apprise the villagers of the terms set forth by the Karbis.
