Assam: Most Durga Puja pandals in Assam take eco-friendly themes

Guwahati, Oct 21: Most of the Durga Puja pandals in Assam have taken up environment and eco-friendly themes.

The Japorigog Sarbajanin Durga Puja in Guwahati has made 60-ft Durga idol, which is the tallest in the city this year.

A group of 15 artisans led by Narayan Chandra Pal of Assam’s Kokrajhar district took two and a half months to craft the idol. The artisans were from different parts of Assam and West Bengal. Pal has been associated with Idol-making for the last 20 years.

“We have made the Durga idol with easily available materials such as bamboo, white cement and jute. In previous years, I have made several idols here in this pandal and received good response from the people. Hope they will love the idol this year too. The idol will be unveiled on October 19,” said Pal.

Similarly, Municipality Durga Puja Committee, one of most popular pujas of Dibrugarh, has showcased the life of a fisherman in their pandal.

The whole pandal and the Durga idol is made up of bamboo. The whole theme is based on ‘Fisherman and their livelihood. The Municipality Durga Puja is celebrating its 38th year and the committee members were seen busy conducting their puja smoothly.

Every year, the puja committee comes up with environment as well as eco-friendly themes.

Raju Deb, advisor of Municipality Durga Puja Committee said, “Every year we take innovative themes and got many awards from District administration. This year, we have tried a different thing. We have showcased life-style of fisherman in our pandal. How fishermen catch fish by using net and other things is showcased in the pandal. All the things are made up with bamboo. The whole pandal is made with bamboo.”

“A fishing boat made with bamboo and other things used for fishing is displayed in the pandal. We have used lights which will attract the pandal hoppers. We tried to make some unique things and the people liked our themes. Every year huge crowds gather in the puja pandal to see our works. The workers were from West Bengal’s Midnapore district,” Raju informed.

Jalan Nagar Sorbojonin Durga Puja Committee has stepped into its 62nd year and this year they have made the pandals with all natural items. The pandal has been made with tree leaves. For past several years, the Puja Committee has been coming up with innovative themes to attract pandal hoppers.

“The puja pandal has been made with all kinds of tree leaves. In the puja pandal you will find birds’ nests. We have not used any materials which are harmful for the nature. If you enter in the puja pandal, you will be mesmerised to see the natural park where you will find everything natural,” said artisan Shantu Mahapatra.

For past several years, Shantu Mahapatra has been engaged with the puja committee and every time he tries different things which will attract the people.

“Every year huge people gather at our puja pandal to see our puja. People have praised our puja for our innovative themes. Last year, we have made tribal park which won awards. This year we expect a good crowd in our puja pandal,” said Partha Bhattacharjee, convenor of the Puja Committee.

More than 120 puja pandals have been set up in Dibrugarh this year to celebrate the Durga Puja.
