Guwahati, Sept 25: Assam Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia has written to President Droupadi Murmu, urging her to order a CBI probe led by a High Court Judge into the sudden death of cultural icon Zubeen Garg in Singapore on September 19.
In his memorandum, Saikia expressed “serious concerns” over the suspicious circumstances surrounding Garg’s death, alleging a possible conspiracy and political targeting. He argued that while the Assam government has handed the case to the CID, the jurisdictional limitations of state police in investigating a death abroad require intervention from central agencies.

Saikia recalled Garg’s role as a vocal critic of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and his participation in anti-CAA protests. He stressed that Garg’s political activism, coupled with his outspoken opposition to environmental destruction and “patronising of anti-Assamese elements,” may have made him a target.
Calling Garg “not merely a singer but a revolutionary voice,” Saikia demanded an enhanced investigative framework under judicial oversight. He urged the President to appoint a sitting or retired Gauhati High Court Judge to supervise the probe, coordinating between the CID, CBI, Ministry of External Affairs, and international agencies.
He also flagged contradictions in organisers’ accounts of Garg’s Singapore trip, alleged pre-departure coercion, and exploitation of his medical vulnerabilities. “This systematic nature of the case involving a death on foreign soil requires the highest level of investigative oversight,” he wrote.
Saikia said uncovering the truth behind Garg’s death was essential to ensure justice and restore public confidence, warning that it may represent the systematic silencing of a fearless voice in Assam.
