Guwahati, Aug 21: Amid speculations on the presence of Taliban sympathisers within India following the Afghanistan coup, Assam Police have arrested at least 12 persons for making Taliban related social media posts.
They were caught in the radar of the Assam Police’s Cyber Cell that keeps constant vigil on social media networks.
According to police, at least 17 social media profiles have been found making posts related to Taliban where it appeared to have supported the coup or the Islamist militant group, in the recent times after the Afghanistan take over.
Police said the posts were made from 11 districts in the state while three other profiles belong to Assam’s citizens but settled outside — one each in Dubai, Saudi Arabia and in Mumbai, India.
“Total 12 persons have been arrested so far in 10 districts of Assam, which include One MBBS student of Hailakandi,  studying in Tezpur Medical college and two Maulanas,” a media intimidation from Assam police mentioned.
Police also mentioned that it is trying to gather more intel on the three persons who are settled outside the state, and will forward the information to the Intelligence Bureau on their details.
While instances of Pakistan sympathising and hoisting of Pakistan flags aren’t new in Assam that has a considerable number of minority population who are miffed, especially the Bengali-speaking and those living in Char areas for being colloquially marked as migrants, Assam didn’t see much support for Taliban, at least openly.
However, other Islamist militant organisations such as Hizbul Mujahideen of Kashmir and Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen of Bangladesh had made it’s presence felt and several operatives were arrested in Western and Central Assam over the past decade
