Guwahati, Oct 20: In a major operation, the Assam Police’s Special Task Force (STF) has busted a newly discovered drug trafficking cartel operating between Manipur and Assam, seizing heroin worth Rs 6 crore and apprehending two drug smugglers.
According to police sources, the STF acted on a tip-off indicating that a consignment of heroin was being transported from Kangpokpi in Manipur to the Lower Assam districts. The consignment was reportedly being delivered to one Murtaza Ahmed, alias Bhulu, of Latashil, Guwahati, who was responsible for distributing the drugs in Baihata and Rangia areas of Assam.
STF officials intercepted a person identified as Bhulu at Amingaon in a Tata Nexon car and recovered 49 soap boxes of heroin weighing 637 grams (without packaging). The seized drugs were valued at approximately Rs 6 crore in the international market, police officials said.
Following Bhulu’s arrest, the STF tracked down the driver of the truck that transported the narcotics from Manipur. The driver, identified as Prasant Toppo of Dokmoka in Karbi Anglong, Assam, was arrested from a parking lot in Changsari in Kamrup District.
Both the Tata Nexon and the truck involved in the operation have been seized. Police officials said legal proceedings have been initiated against the accused, and further investigation into the cartel is underway.
