Must read

Guwahati, Jan 22: In a landmark move to address healthcare disparities in Assam’s tea estates, the National Health Mission (NHM), Assam, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to upgrade 354 tea garden hospitals into Ayushman Arogya Mandirs. This initiative is set to deliver quality, accessible healthcare to tea garden workers and their families, tackling persistent health challenges in these underserved communities.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Ashok Singhal, the chief guest at the MoU signing event, emphasized the state government’s dedication to improving healthcare access for tea garden workers. Singhal highlighted critical health issues such as anaemia, malnutrition, maternal and neonatal mortality, diabetes, and tuberculosis, which have long been exacerbated by inadequate infrastructure and sanitation.

Building on existing health programs like Mobile Medical Units, free medicines, and patient transport services, the Ayushman Arogya Mandir project aims to offer sustainable, long-term solutions. These centers will provide 12 essential healthcare services, including maternal and neonatal care, child and adolescent health, infectious disease management, mental health support, elderly care, and emergency services. Community Health Officers (CHOs) will lead efforts at these upgraded facilities, supported by new labour rooms and neonatal emergency units.

Minister Singhal also urged tea estate owners to prioritize worker well-being by adopting holistic approaches, integrating yoga and wellness into daily routines. He reiterated the importance of preventive healthcare, linking it to a stronger and more productive tea industry.

Highlighting progress, Singhal noted that 4,947 health centers across Assam have already been upgraded to Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of affordable and accessible healthcare for all.

This initiative marks a transformative step for Assam’s tea estate communities, promising to improve health outcomes for thousands of workers and their families while setting a precedent for healthcare reforms in agricultural labor sectors.

The program was attended by estate managers, labor organizations, and other stakeholders, reflecting widespread support for this ambitious healthcare transformation.
