Guwahati, June 2: Two men have been arrested in connection with the alleged rape of a 7-year-old girl in Assam’s Tinsukia district, police said on Sunday.
The accused have been identified as Raja Karmakar (26) and Shyam Murari (25).
According to reports, the incident took place on May 28 in a village under the jurisdiction of Bordubi Police Station. The case sparked widespread outrage, with locals staging protests and demanding swift justice and stringent punishment for the perpetrators.
Acting on a tip-off, police apprehended the prime accused, Raja Karmakar, from the Dirak Gate area near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. Based on his confession, police later arrested Shyam Murari, a resident of Kehang Tea Estate, who is also suspected of having been involved in the crime.
A case has been registered under Sections 65(2) and 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
“We have arrested both the accused and begun our interrogation. Both have confessed to the crime,” said a police official.
