Guwahati, Mar 9: The Maharaja Prithu Flyover, the longest elevated corridor in Assam, will be opened to the public on Tuesday. The 5.5-km flyover connecting Noonmati to Dighalipukhuri is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion along some of the city’s busiest routes.
The corridor links the eastern part of the city, Noonmati, with the central area of Dighalipukhuri, passing through several key locations including Bamunimaidan and Ambari.
Built at an estimated cost of around ₹850 crore, the four-lane elevated corridor has been designed to reduce heavy traffic pressure on ground-level roads that remain crowded throughout the day.
Construction of the flyover began toward the end of 2023 and was completed in approximately 18 months.
The elevated structure stands on 122 pillars, forming a continuous corridor aimed at facilitating smoother and faster movement of vehicles across the city.
“The flyover will ease traffic congestion and reduce travel time. We are happy with the development. It was a long-pending demand of the people of Guwahati,” said a resident.
The flyover has been named after Maharaja Prithu, an ancient ruler associated with the region’s historical legacy.
The naming is seen as a tribute to Assam’s cultural past while symbolising a new phase of infrastructure growth in Guwahati.
