Guwahati, Jan 21: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today held a series of high-level meetings with global industry leaders to explore investment, climate action and technology-led opportunities for the state at Davos.

Sarma is the first Chief Minister from the Northeast to attend the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos.

On the sidelines of the WEF summit, Sarma met Ikarus Janzen, Chief Operating Officer of the Varaha Group, a climate-focused organisation working to remove one billion tonnes of carbon dioxide through initiatives such as biochar, regenerative agriculture and afforestation. The Chief Minister said discussions focused on bringing Varaha Group’s climate and sustainability initiatives to Assam to benefit the state’s farming communities.

The Assam Chief Minister also met Gary Cohn, Vice Chairman of IBM, to explore potential investment opportunities in the state. Sarma said an IBM team would visit Guwahati in the coming weeks to assess opportunities in skilling, artificial intelligence adoption and other technology-driven initiatives.

“Happy to share that a team would be coming down to Guwahati to evaluate opportunities in skilling, AI adoption and other initiatives,” Sarma said in a post on social media.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister also highlighted Assam’s conservation efforts, stating that Kaziranga National Park is among the cleanest national parks in the country. He said the soon-to-be-constructed Kaziranga Elevated Corridor would strengthen wildlife conservation efforts, particularly for the one-horned rhinoceros, while helping maintain a balanced wildlife population across protected areas.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Kaziranga Elevated Corridor Project on January 18, 2026. The project involves the four-laning of the Kaliabor–Numaligarh section of National Highway 715 in Nagaon district and is valued at over Rs 6,950 crore.

Designed in line with Supreme Court directions and recommendations of the Wildlife Institute of India, the project aims to improve connectivity between Central and Upper Assam while ensuring the protection of the rich biodiversity of Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
