Meghalaya marks 54th Statehood Day in Baghmara for first time, CM announces major projects

Baghmara, Jan 21: Meghalaya on Wednesday celebrated its 54th Statehood Day in Baghmara for the first time, turning the spotlight on South Garo Hills and honouring the legacy of the State’s founding father and first Chief Minister, late Captain Williamson A. Sangma.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said the decision to hold the official state-level celebration in Baghmara reflected the government’s commitment to ensure that no region of Meghalaya remains neglected. He acknowledged that the area had been overlooked for years but said sustained efforts were now underway to bring about a turnaround.

Calling the occasion deeply symbolic, the Chief Minister said Baghmara, the home district of Captain Williamson A. Sangma, was a fitting venue to reaffirm the values on which Meghalaya was founded—unity, perseverance and non-violent struggle.

Addressing the gathering, Sangma said Meghalaya had recorded an average growth rate of around 10 per cent over the past three years, placing it among the fastest-growing states in the country, but stressed that development must be felt in people’s daily lives rather than reflected only in statistics.

He announced that the second phase of the Baghmara water supply project, costing Rs 140 crore, had been cleared a day earlier and assured that road connectivity and healthcare infrastructure in the region would be prioritised. Expressing concern over the condition of the Baghmara Civil Hospital, he said the facility would be upgraded and personally monitored to ensure adequate manpower, hygiene and equipment.

The Chief Minister also paid tribute to leaders who led the statehood movement and cautioned against growing divisions in society, particularly on social media. He said the people of Meghalaya were once united across communities for a common cause and urged citizens to uphold that spirit.

Sangma informed that he had received a personal letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveying greetings on the occasion. The letter recalled the contributions of late P.A. Sangma and acknowledged his role in shaping Meghalaya and the nation.

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong described the celebration as historic, noting that it was possibly the first time such a major state function had been held in Baghmara. Acknowledging South Garo Hills as one of the more backward districts, he said the government was focusing on last-mile development, especially road connectivity, adding that the Shillong–Baghmara road project was around 60 per cent complete.

Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said Meghalaya Day was a moment to reflect on the state’s journey and future direction. He noted that people-centric governance since 2018 had brought visible change across regions and highlighted initiatives promoting unity, skill development and employability.

Chief Secretary Dr. Shakil P. Ahammed, delivering the keynote address, emphasised balanced development, saying progress in Shillong must equally apply to districts like Baghmara. Referring to Vision 2032, he said it was backed by concrete planning and execution, with gains seen in roads, education, agriculture, power reforms and entrepreneurship.

The celebration began with the rendition of the State Anthem by the Khmih Choir, Shillong, followed by cultural performances showcasing Khasi and Garo traditions. Meghalaya Day Awards, Excellence Awards and Governor’s Police Medals were presented to recognise outstanding contributions and service.

The programme concluded with a screening of the video Rise Meghalaya, a vote of thanks, and the National Anthem.
