BCCI directs KKR to release Mustafizur Rahman amid Bangladesh-related concerns

Must read

Guwahati, Jan 3: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has instructed Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman from their squad ahead of the IPL 2026 season, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said on Saturday.

The directive comes in the backdrop of recent developments and rhetoric in Bangladesh that have triggered public and political reactions in India. KKR had signed Mustafizur for ₹9.20 crore at the IPL 2026 auction, well above his base price of ₹2 crore.

Speaking to reporters, Saikia said the decision followed a review of the situation. “After observing recent developments in Bangladesh, the BCCI has taken a decision and instructed KKR to release Bangladeshi bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their squad,” he said.

He added that the board would consider any request from KKR for a replacement. “If KKR seeks a replacement, the BCCI will take a decision and allow it as per the terms and conditions of the Indian Premier League,” Saikia noted, adding that the franchise has been asked to take immediate action and make a formal announcement soon.

The BCCI had earlier stepped in following criticism over KKR’s decision to sign the Bangladesh international at the auction. The bidding for Mustafizur saw competition from Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals, before KKR secured him at a premium price.

Saikia clarified that the move is based on the current situation and that future decisions would depend on how circumstances evolve.
