Guwahati, Jan 3: Zubeen Garg’s wife, Garima Garg, on Saturday expressed concern after charges were not framed during the third day of hearing in the Sessions Court in Guwahati.
Speaking to the media after the court proceedings, she urged the government to constitute a strong public prosecution team and to move for the formation of a special court to ensure timely justice.
Garima Garg said that several accused have now engaged senior and experienced lawyers, indicating that the defence has built strong legal teams.
“Charges were not framed today. Amrit Prabha Mahanta’s personal lawyer, Anand Bhuyan, was present for the first time and filed a bail petition on her behalf. I have also seen that Siddharth Sharma has appointed his lawyer, Anil Mishra, who I heard is from the Supreme Court. His team will appear virtually from the next hearing onwards,” she said.
She further added that Shyankanu Mahanta has appointed a lawyer from Kolkata, though she could not confirm the name.
Sandipan Garg and Paresh Baishya have filed bail petitions through their legal counsel, while Shekharjyoti Goswami has also appointed an advocate, though the lawyer was not physically present in court.
“From what we have seen, the accused have built very strong defence teams and they are fully prepared to fight the case in court. Now, we also need to be equally strong from the public prosecution side,” Garima Garg said.
She appealed to the state government to appoint an experienced and well-equipped public prosecution team in whom people can have faith.
“Our honourable Chief Minister has already announced on the first day of this year that a strong public prosecution team will be appointed. He has also said that he will appeal to the High Court for setting up a special court. We have full faith in him and we believe this will be done very soon,” she said.
Highlighting the scale of the case, Garima Garg pointed out that there are 394 witnesses, which could significantly prolong the trial if a special court is not constituted.
“The next hearing date is January 17. The prosecution team needs sufficient time to prepare, study the huge chargesheet, and be fully equipped with presentations and legal strategy. I once again request our Chief Minister to appoint a very strong public prosecution team and to push for a special court, otherwise the case may take a very long time,” she added.
