BJP fields 28 candidates for TTAADC polls, set for direct showdown with TIPRA Motha

Agartala, March 24: With alliance prospects collapsing ahead of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday announced its full list of 28 candidates, setting the stage for a direct electoral contest with the TIPRA Motha party.

The move confirms that both former allies will face off across all seats, significantly raising the political stakes in Tripura’s tribal belt ahead of polling scheduled in April.

The candidates were unveiled by state BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee at the party headquarters in Agartala, in the presence of Chief Minister Manik Saha and other senior leaders.

In a key prelude to the announcement, TTAADC Executive Member Ananta Debbarma and MDC Sadagar Koloi switched allegiance from TIPRA Motha to the BJP. Both leaders have been accommodated in the party’s candidate list, signalling BJP’s push to strengthen its base within the autonomous council.

Bhattacharjee said the party will contest all 28 seats and ensure timely filing of nominations, expressing confidence that voters would back BJP’s governance model centred on development and accountability.

Chief Minister Saha reiterated that tribal welfare remains a priority, noting that a significant portion of the state’s budget has been allocated for the upliftment of Janajati communities.

On contentious political issues, including the implementation of the Tripartite Agreement—popularly known as the Tiprasa Accord—and demands for direct funding to the TTAADC under the proposed 125th Constitutional Amendment, Saha asserted that these commitments would be fulfilled only if the BJP forms the council.

“Once we form the government in the TTAADC, all pending issues will be addressed and our commitments, including those under the Tiprasa Accord, will be implemented,” he said.

With both BJP and TIPRA Motha now locked in a direct contest, the upcoming elections are expected to hinge on governance delivery, implementation of key agreements, and the broader question of tribal political aspirations in the state.
