Guwahati, Aug 24: In a tragic incident, a senior BJP leader in Lakhimpur district of Assam allegedly committed suicide on Monday following a financial crisis he faced due to alleged non-payment of bills by the state government relating to various works he undertook during Covid-19 lockdown.
The BJP worker has been identified as Mithuranjan Das who committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence at Laluk in Lakhimpur district of Assam.
According to police, Das left behind a three-page “suicide note” wherein he blamed the Assam government for his financial crisis.
Police said he allegedly had to receive Rs 20 lakh for a road construction work.
The debt-ridden BJP leader in his “suicide note” also alleged that a cheque of Rs 10 lakh that he received as partial payment of the road construction work got bounced in the bank.
According to source, Mithuranjan Das also supplied essentials in a COVID Care Centre, payment of which was also due.
Sources said he had to receive Rs 17 lakhs from the Assam government for supplying essentials to the COVID Care Centre.
“We have sent the body for postmortem. After postmortem report we can ascertain the real cause of his death. As the preliminary investigation revels it seems as he committed suicide,” a police official said.
