Dibrugarh, Feb 15: Nitin Nabin, the newly elected national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), will visit Dibrugarh on February 18 to attend a Prista Pramukh Sanmelan at Khanikar field.

Confirming the two-day tour, Dilip Saikia said Nabin will be visiting Upper Assam on February 18 and 19. Saikia visited Dibrugarh on Sunday to review preparations for the programme.

Speaking to reporters, Saikia said Nabin will arrive in Dibrugarh on February 18 and participate in the Prista Pramukh programme at Khanikar. On February 19, he will travel to Tinsukia and visit the Maidam of Matak king Sarbananda Singha.

“This will be Nitin Nabin’s first visit to Dibrugarh and Tinsukia after assuming charge as the BJP national president. He will take part in several organisational programmes,” Saikia said.

He added that a BJP zonal meeting will also be organised during the visit, with party members from seven to eight districts expected to participate. A separate interaction with the leading citizens of Dibrugarh has also been planned.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma are expected to attend the Prista Pramukh Sanmelan on February 18.

The visit assumes significance ahead of the upcoming Assam Assembly elections. According to party sources, Nabin is scheduled to meet mandal presidents from 18 mandals across six constituencies in Dibrugarh district to strategise for the polls.

The BJP had secured a majority of seats in Upper Assam in the last Assembly elections and considers the region a stronghold. Party leaders said efforts are underway to consolidate support and aim for a clean sweep in the upcoming polls.
