Guwahati, July 22: The new plant in Dhemaji will improve the supply of fresh milk in upper Assam by reducing transportation time and costs from Purabi Dairy’s main plant in Guwahati.

In a significant move towards bolstering the dairy industry in Assam, the West Assam Milk Producers’ Co-operative Union Ltd. (WAMUL), better known as Purabi Dairy, has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Directorate of Dairy Development (DoDD), Government of Assam.

This pivotal agreement, endorsed by Ms Anusuya Sarma, Director of Dairy Development, and Mr Sameer Kr Parida, Managing Director of WAMUL, grants Purabi Dairy the authority to manage the DoDD’s dairy plant in Dhemaji, which has a capacity of 5,000 litres per day.

This collaboration is poised to invigorate the cooperative dairy sector in upper Assam by enhancing the availability of Purabi milk and milk products across the region. Beyond just increasing product availability, it promises to generate substantial income opportunities for local farmers by opening up new markets and providing them with comprehensive training and development programs.

Mr. Sameer Kr Parida said the MoU is a significant step towards enhancing the dairy sector in upper Assam. “By operating the Dhemaji dairy plant, we will increase the availability of Purabi milk and milk products in the region” he added.

The establishment of the new facility in Dhemaji is expected to streamline the supply of fresh milk in upper Assam, cutting down on the time and cost associated with transporting products from Purabi Dairy’s main plant in Guwahati.

Operations at the Dhemaji dairy plant are set to begin soon, marking a crucial leap forward for the dairy sector in upper Assam. This initiative aligns with the ambitious goal set by the Chief Minister of Assam Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, who aims for the state’s dairy sector to achieve a production target of 10 lakh litres per day.

The Directorate of Dairy Development has been proactive in fostering the growth of the dairy industry in Assam, and the signing of this MoU with WAMUL is a testament to their efforts. By entrusting the Dhemaji plant to Purabi Dairy, the Directorate aims to leverage WAMUL’s expertise and resources to boost milk production, improve supply chain efficiencies, and provide better market access and training for local farmers.
