Guwahati, June 14: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a senior railway engineer of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) in Assam for allegedly accepting a bribe to clear a contractor’s pending bill.
The accused, a Senior Section Engineer (SSE), Carriage and Wagon (C&W), posted at NF Railway’s Silchar division, was caught red-handed while allegedly demanding and accepting Rs 20,000 from a contractor, the CBI said on Sunday.
According to the agency, the engineer had allegedly sought illegal gratification to process and clear a pending bill of around Rs 20 lakh related to work already executed by the contractor.
The CBI registered a case against the official on June 13 after receiving a complaint that the engineer had demanded one per cent of the pending bill amount as a bribe for clearing the payment.
Acting on the complaint, the agency laid a trap and apprehended the accused while allegedly accepting the bribe amount from the complainant.
The CBI said searches were underway at the residential premises of the accused as part of the investigation.
Further investigation is in progress.
