Dimapur, June 14: Eleven Naga tribal youth organisations on Sunday united in condemning the killing of six Naga civilians in Manipur, demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible and warning that the incident should be treated as an attack on the entire Naga community rather than any single tribe.
The joint consultative meeting, convened by the Zeliang Youth Organisation Dimapur (ZYOD) and Zeliang Youth Organisation Chümoukedima (ZYOC) at the Zeliang Community Welfare Building in Dimapur, brought together representatives of major Naga youth bodies from across communities.
Participants described the killings as a shocking act of violence that had triggered widespread anger among Nagas. ZYOD General Secretary Rampau Haining said the outrage stemmed not only from the deaths but also from reports that the victims’ bodies were mutilated and dismembered.
Calling the incident a “heinous crime”, Haining noted that the bodies were recovered within 24 hours of the reported release of 14 Kuki hostages, a development that has further heightened tensions and demands for accountability.
The meeting resolved to submit a joint representation to Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio through the Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur on June 15, urging the Nagaland government to press for swift action. The youth bodies stressed that justice must extend beyond ex gratia payments and compensation.
“Those responsible must be identified, apprehended and prosecuted under law,” Haining said.
ZYOD President Idizeung Reunim questioned how unarmed civilians became targets and raised concerns over the apparent failure of security agencies to prevent the incident despite reports of armed group movements in the area.
“This is not just a Zeliangrong issue. It affects every Naga in Nagaland, Manipur, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Myanmar,” Reunim said, calling for unity across tribal and state boundaries.
In a strong message, the organisations asserted that Naga youth would remain united in seeking justice and warned against further provocations. At the same time, they clarified that their demand was not directed against Kuki civilians and reiterated their commitment to pursuing justice through lawful means.
